Welcome to Coomalong Estate,
our Family-Owned Olive Grove
in North East Victoria, Australia.
Our commitment to sustainable farming practices and passion for producing high-quality olive oil is at the heart of everything we do.
'Coomalong' (an aboriginal word meaning: plenty of possums) was originally a sheep farm. The land suffered from over-clearing, overgrazing and the droughts of the early 1980s.
Farmer and innovator Jack Frewin saw this land's potential for farm forestry. He built three dams along the main gully and key-line channels to slow down and contain water on the ground.
He planted tens of thousands of trees with his three young sons, Andy, Michael and Richard, on Coomalong Farm.
Jack Frewin also founded FREWIN TREES, a tree-planting company that has contributed to several significant reforestation projects nationwide. Furthermore, he has been working with CSIRO to provide land and plantations onsite to support and monitor forest research projects.
In the late 90s, he transitioned Coomalong from a barren sheep farm to an olive grove and planted the first olive trees.
Deep ripping the soil for water management and planting the Olive trees in rows along the land contours that twist and turn has created a wonderfully unique grove that embraces the natural landscape and creates a tough and resilient non-irrigation Olive grove.
Now 'Coomalong' is the home of Coomalong Estate Olive Oil - an established and strong olive grove with 7,500 olive trees nestled among plots of Eucalyptus tree plantations.
This landscape transformation also offers various native wildlife a home, Estimating over 30 bird varieties on the farm, with a few mobs of Kangaroos and a Swamp Wallaby or two. You can hear Koalas calling at night and occasionally spot a goanna.
Jack's vision of creating a haven for wildlife and regenerating the country has been realised. His Legacy is embraced by the new generation of the Frewin Family, who are interested in building on this venture with their talents and interests.
The future of Coomalong is in good hands, and we are excited to continue this journey.
